Northern Door County – Ellison Bay, Gills Rock, and Rowleys Bay – is alive with activity. Shops, galleries, restaurants, and resorts are opening up every day. It’s a wonderful time of year to experience northern Door!
One of the shops opening up Mother’s Day weekend is Simply Scandinavian in Gills Rock. Located at the foot of the dock, Simply Scandinavian is housed in a historic building that has served many purposes for over 100 years such as a ferry terminal and ticket booth, and a smoked fish shop. But don’t let the small size deceive you because the interior holds treasures of all kinds!
From handmade soaps and hand lotions made from goat’s milk, to stunning handmade wooden bowls, there is something unique and surprising at every turn. Folk art abounds, including a wonderful array of Santa ornaments. Exquisite hand-painted REAL rhea, ostrich, and goose eggs adorn one corner while books for adults and children are featured in another.
Handmade knit hats, mittens, and scarfs abound, along with infant sweaters. Cooks will savor specialty cookbooks and one-of-a-kind aprons. Treasure boxes, purses, and jewelry are found throughout the shop, along with Russian nesting dolls. There are even handmade dresses for American Girl dolls! Of course, Door County cherries, lingonberries, candles, and homemade cherry jam are featured.
Simply Scandinavian is open from May 11 through October 31. For the next several weeks, their hours will be 9:30 AM until at least 5:00 PM. On some lovely evenings they are open longer!
