Door County’s ‘Tip’ of the Peninsula – A Great Place to Live, Work and Play!

, , , , , , ,

Every day I am reminded of how fortunate I am to live in this wonderful place called northern Door County. Surrounded by the Green Bay waters and Lake Michigan, the ‘tip’ of the Door County Peninsula is a magical place.

Ellison Bay Scenic Overlook

The very north end of Door County consists of Ellison Bay, Gills Rock and Rowleys Bay. Each hamlet offers something special. Each are peaceful, scenic and breathtaking. This is indeed the ideal vacation spot. Water activities abound: swimming, kayaking, boating and scenic cruises are highlights of anyone’s visit to the area.

Gills Rock

Rich in the arts, there are artisans throughout the tip of the peninsula: many galleries offer public demonstrations. If you are a foodie (or just plain hungry), these hamlets have world-class dining from family-style to elegant cuisine. Not to mention shops of all kinds for those who love to shop or are just curious about their offerings.

Turtle Ridge Gallery, Ellison Bay

The ‘tip’ also offers one state park (Newport) with an expansive sand beach, hiking, picnic area, and backpacking camp sites. There are two county parks (Door Bluff Headlands – undeveloped, and Ellison Bay Bluff County Park – phenomenal!) In addition, there are nine town parks that offer great photo opportunities with picnic areas. Two parks have outstanding playgrounds: Ellison Bay Community Park/Beach and Gills Rock Town Park.
Boat launches and marinas are located in each village.

Yes, it’s a great place to visit. But it’s also a great place to live, work and play. Find yourself here . . .

Fishing enthusiasts love the easy-access marina right on the bay. The historic Mink River Estuary is directly off of Rowleys Bay which offers bass and walleye fishing, along with charter boat fishing. Silent sports abound with kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding, Segway tours, zip-line and amazing bird watching. Spring Arrives in Northern Door County!

Even though the calendar marked March 20 as the first official day of Spring, Door County was still covered in pristine mounds of snow. That didn’t damper the spirits of residents, businesses or visitors at the North end of Door County: Ellison Bay, Gills Rock, and Rowleys Bay. We are tough and hardy! Having said that, it is now the middle of April and thankfully, signs of Spring are all around Northern Door County.

Fresh rain helps melt the remaining die-hard snow mounds. It brings milder temperatures and the sweet scent of earth, newly uncovered and rediscovered. One of our greatest pleasures is to hike through the woods or step off our back porch and see the beginning of buds popping through the soil. It’s amazing that these hardy plants grow in these conditions – rising up through snow and leaves, between our ever-present rocks, and stretching upward toward the sun. Soon Northern Door County will be covered in blooms, wild and newly planted.

Blooming 3 31 13A sure sign of Spring!

Spring also brings new faces, or perhaps we should say old faces, as in familiar. It is the time of year when our many business owners return to Northern Door County. They scrub, paint, order, stock, and anything else they need to do to open their businesses. From our wonderful artisans, to delectable restaurants, to shops and lodging establishments, marinas, parks, and everything in between, Northern Door County has awakened to a new season.

Cherry BlossomsNorthern Door County will soon be covered with cherry blossoms!
